Biofuels also play a leading role in the region's energy policy; there are several projects underway that will spearhead national production of biodiesel and bioethanol.

Cantabria's coastal location has also allowed it to innovate in the field of tidal and wave energy, with various experiments coordinated by the University of Cantabria which have created prototypes aimed at revolutionising the renewable energy market. The Institute of Environmental Hydraulics (IH Cantabria) has over 60 researchers and specialists in this field, integrated into the Oceanographic and Coastal Engineering Group and the Underwater Outlet and Environmental Hydraulics Group, providing optimum development capabilities.

The Cantabrian coast will soon have one of the first wave energy production parks in the world, with 1.25 MW of power.
