Metal and Mechanics

The metal and mechanics sector has an extraordinary tradition in Cantabria. Since the first iron blast furnace established in Spain was built in the vicinity of the Bay of Santander in the 17th Century, metal-related industry has been one of the mainstays of the region's economy and currently represents the top sector in terms of turnover, with 43% of the total (excluding motor vehicles).

All of the areas of activity have grown notably in recent years, with the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment standing out.
